Sam Mooy: On the Hill - for The Australian
With the attitude of boys will be boys and a sub-culture of bingedrinking and blasphemy, these sort of past-times curb the bordom prior to the big race between 2 major car manufacturers - Ford and Holden. Fans surround the track, commonly known as "The Hill" at Mt Panorama, Bathurst, NSW, Australia.
Since the 1990's fans would commonly riot and set cars on fire in a burn-out pit, fueled by excessive drinking and boredom but these days with heavy policing, the hill is a more subdued place, but the revellry and heavy 4 days of drinking in a "boys club" mentality still exsists.
